He started working at KHSL in Chico. He walked into the station and said he wanted to be an intern. Fortunately, the station’s Weatherman had turned in his resignation an hour before Steve arrived! He worked at KHSL for a period of two years then it was off to KFTY in Santa Rosa. At KFTY is where he actually learned about Bay Area weather. It rained a LOT in 1982-83! An El Nino year! After a few years, it was down to KICU-Channel 36 (the original) in San Jose. He worked there until the station made cutbacks and eliminated the weather.
During that time Steve transitioned into an on-air host with the old SportsChannel doing San Jose Sharks hockey in 1993-94. It was a wonderful run to the Western Conference Finals. Once the season ended, though, he had a desire to get back into the weather and at this time he relocated to Monterey where he was hired at KMST. This was during the 1994-95 rainy season whereby all roads in and out of Monterey were flooded, therefore, many weather highlights included being helicoptered.
After spending three years in Monterey, Steve got the call to do work at KPIX-Channel 5 in San Francisco. This, therefore, led to a wonderful weather experience at WBBM-Channel 2 in Chicago, where he worked for less than a year then he was off to Denver at KMGH.
