In 1999, Pelley left the White House to join 60 Minutes II shortly after its inception. In 2000, Pelley landed the first interview with president-elect George W. Bush. On the morning of September 11 of the following year, Pelley reported from the scene of the collapsing World Trade Center towers.
On the anniversary of 9/11 in 2002, Pelley was granted the one and only interview with President Bush. Pelley started submitting reports for 60 Minutes in 2003. Prior to the pope’s visit to the US in September 2015, Pelley met him in the Vatican. He later led CBS News’ coverage of the trip.

Since he joined the broadcast, half of all the major prizes won have been attributed to his reports for 60 Minutes. Murrow awards, three George Foster Peabody awards, four Alfred I. Dupont-Columbia Silver Batons, a George Polk award, as well as honors from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Overseas Press Club of America, Investigative Reporters and Editors and the Writers Guild of America.
