It was September 15, 2017. Courtney was boating with family on Christmas Lake, a lake they’d been on hundreds of times before. Only this time, Courtney fell out of the boat on a turn. The Emergency responders rushed her to Hennepin County Medical Center with her barely foot hanging on and unsalvageable. After the check-up, orthopedic trauma surgeon Dr. Andrew Schmidt and prosthetist Yakov Gradinar delivered the difficult news that her leg below the knee was seriously damaged and had to be removed.
After treatment, Courtney goes to HCMC regularly for physical therapy. She however hopes to qualify for the 2022 Paralympics, though she said on Instagram that it would “take a miracle” to make the U.S. team but she’s “going to give it my all.”
