Bill Martin is an American Certified Broadcast Meteorologist who serves as the Chief Meteorologist at KTVU-TV in San Francisco, California. He joined this station in 1993 as a weekend meteorologist. During this time, KTVU did not have a weather department, therefore, Bill was given the opportunity of creating and building KTVU’s weather brand from the ground up.

After San Francisco State, he did an internship at KRON Television (NBC), in San Francisco.

His dad was a veterinarian and he moved his family up to the hills to hunt and fish, so Martin was outside all of the time. “When I was about 7 or 8 I watched the weather guy on KCRA and I thought, I want to do that. It was science and the outdoors and I loved watching the guy use the technology,” he said.

As a 5th Generation Northern Californian, Martin says that he is very proud that his ancestors were some of the earliest settlers in San Francisco. His great uncle by the name of Joe was the sheriff of Vacaville in the late 1800s. Joe was known as the Sampson of Vacaville because of his 6-foot 4-inch frame and his willingness to get into scraps! He once sparred with “Gentlemen Jim” Corbett, the most famous boxer of his time.

In 2014, after over 25 years forecasting weather in the Bay Area, Bill was one among the 6 meteorologists in the country chosen to go to the White House to interview President Obama on Climate Change. There he had the opportunity to attend meetings with the President and his top science advisors. As a result of his successful career, Bill has been awarded the CBM (Certified Broadcast Meteorologist) by The American Meteorological Society, which is the highest level of certification available and has been awarded to only a handful of meteorologists on the West Coast.

Bill has stated that one claims to fame is that he has read nearly every book ever written on California history. Therefore he is fascinated by the state and the people that are drawn in it from the Native Americans to the Spanish to the pioneers. In 2015 Bill was awarded a Northern California Emmy for a best on-air meteorologist. This is his dream job, to be able to think about and talk about the weather for a living, and he is thrilled to be part of the KTVU Family.

Prior to joining KTVU, Bill did an internship at KRON Television (NBC), in San Francisco for 1 year. This was after he spent 3 years postgraduate at San Francisco State studying Atmospheric Science. He then took a job as a Chief Meteorologist at KFTY(Ind) in Santa Rosa for 2 years. He late on moved to KPIX(CBS) in San Francisco and was their morning show meteorologist for 2 years.
