Amy Robach Breast Cancer
Robach was diagnosed with breast cancer on October 30, 2013. Robach, then 40, received a phone call several weeks later, on Oct. 30, informing her that she had stage 2 invasive breast cancer, following a live mammogram on “Good Morning America” to start off Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Robach began chemotherapy in December 2013. Doctors injected powerful medications into her system, which made her sick, caused about a quarter of her hair to fall out, and wiped out her memory at times. But she continued to show up at work, even if she did and said things on television that she would immediately forget.
Robach endured a double mastectomy, eight rounds of chemotherapy, and then breast reconstruction surgery shortly after her diagnosis.
Despite the fact that the tumor appeared to be straightforward to remove via lumpectomy, Robach chose a bilateral mastectomy. She made this choice to prevent additional scans and biopsies, as well as for increased peace of mind. During the mastectomy, the surgeon discovered a second cancerous tumor that had gone undetected previously. As of 2021, Robach is a survivor of breast cancer.
